Let’s keep campaigning to make Canada part of the solution to climate change in 2010!
David Suzuki Foundation supporters and coalition partners across Canada made tremendous strides in the lead up to the UN climate summit in Copenhagen. Canadians are calling for strong climate leadership and thanks to you, momentum is growing every day. We need to keep up the pressure.
While Canada’s prime minister and world leaders failed to deliver the fair, ambitious and binding agreement we need to fight global warming, the movement for solutions in Canada and around the world has never been stronger and alive!
Clearly, the federal government’s weak performance and lack of ambition in addressing climate change was out of step with the unprecedented mobilization of Canadians.
All told Canadians took thousands and thousands actions, including sending messages and phone calls to the prime minister, organizing events across Canada and joining over 15 million people worldwide who signed the tcktcktck petition.
From individual citizens to mayors to faith groups, from doctors to youth groups, from business to Olympic athletes—Canadians gave our prime minister a green light to sign a fair, ambitious and binding agreement on climate change.
The disconnect between Canadians calling for leadership and the federal government’s inaction did not go unnoticed. Canada’s prime minister and federal government were singled out throughout the UN summit for obstructing the negotiations. Our federal government’s track record was so bad that it received the Fossil of the Year award for its negotiating position and for having the weakest performance and policies for reducing global warming pollution in the industrialized world.
The science and economics are clear. Global action on climate change is vital for the health of our economy, our communities and our future. We have solutions to address climate change. And citizens in Canada and around the world are calling for action. What we need to turn this around is political will.
Climate change is the defining issue of our time. We need to get our federal government on track in Canada and back to the table with an even stronger mandate to work for a fair, ambitious and binding deal. The good news is that 2010 many opportunities. The spotlight will be on Canada as it chairs the G8 and co-hosts the G20 summits in June 2010. And there will be a number of UN climate negotiating sessions in 2010.
A huge thank you for your participation in the David Suzuki Foundation’s 2009 climate campaign. With all the momentum and movement building we’ve seen this year, 2010 is shaping up to be an exciting year. Let’s keep campaigning to ensure Canada is part of the solution. Together we can make it happen.

December 9, 2009 Vancouver—Canadian winter Olympians are urging Prime Minister Stephen Harper to protect winter sports by supporting a fair, ambitious and binding agreement at the UN climate summit in Copenhagen.
Twenty members of Canada’s Olympic team took a break from their busy training schedules to tell the prime minister that global warming is the greatest threat to Canada’s winter sports. “We’re already seeing the impacts of climate change first-hand. For winter athletes, climate change means less snow and ice and cancelled races due to increasingly unpredictable weather. We can’t sit on the sidelines when solutions exist. As a country we must act,” says Sara Renner, Olympic silver medalist and member of the Canadian Cross-Country Ski Team.
Winter activities across Canada, from Olympic sports like skiing and snowboarding to iconic Canadian pastimes such as pond hockey and tobogganing, will be at risk if we don’t take international action to reduce global warming, according to an open letter by the winter Olympians to the prime minister.
The athletes are encouraging the prime minister to seek a constructive solution at the UN climate summit in Copenhagen to ensure global greenhouse gas emissions are reduced to safe levels based on the best scientific information.
Canada is lagging behind in action to cut greenhouse gas emissions. “Our country is one of the top ten global warming polluters and doesn’t yet have an effective action plan in place. But the Prime Minister can turn that around,” according to David Suzuki Foundation climate specialist, Ian Bruce. “Canada can break the deadlock at the UN summit in Copenhagen by committing to stronger science-based targets and backing that up with an effective national action plan,” says Mr. Bruce.
“In Copenhagen, our federal government has the opportunity to cooperate with the rest of the world to build an agreement that will protect us against global warming and ensure a lasting legacy for our winter sports culture. We are hoping that Canada signs a fair, ambitious and legally binding agreement at the UN climate summit,” Ms. Renner says.
Thomas Grandi, former Olympian and member of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team, delivers the letter today at Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s constituency office in Calgary. “Canadians can make a big difference in their everyday lives, but the public can't do it alone. Prime Minister Harper, you have a tremendous opportunity to show decisive leadership at the UN climate summit”, says Mr. Grandi.

Note to editors:
International efforts must ensure the global average temperature does not exceed 2° C from pre-industrial levels – a threshold that leading scientists say must not be breached if we are to avoid dangerous levels of climate change.
Possible impacts of climate change on winter sports, if we don’t take action now:
* B.C.’s Whistler area, site of 2010 Olympic Winter Games, could experience up to a 5ºC increase in average winter temperature over the next 70 years under a high-emission scenario (i.e. business as usual - without strong international action to reduce global warming.)
* By 2050, there could be fewer than 100 days of skiing at many resorts, even with massive and costly snow-making efforts, with lower elevation resorts in central Canada being hit the hardest.
* Near the end of this century, the skating season on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa could be shortened to just one week. This would likely mean the end of Ottawa’s Winterlude, one of the largest winter festivals in North America, which attracts more than a million tourists to the region every year with outdoor ice skating, ice sculpture and a range of outdoor events.
* By 2050, little or no cross-country skiing would be possible in current locations in Ontario and Quebec.
* Snowfall provides a protective cover for frozen lakes and rivers, but with a general trend of warmer temperatures and decreasing snowfall predicted for Canada, lake and river ice may not thicken to reliable levels for skating, pond hockey, ice fishing, and other recreational uses in locations where those sports are currently practiced. Apart from the cultural and recreational impacts, it’s estimated, for example, that ice fishing alone contributes about $528 million in direct investments and goods and services each year.

Between 7 and 9 o clock in the morning, december 9, 2009 this strange thing happened in the skies above Norway. Thousands of people saw this, took photos and filmed it and posted to their blogs. It appeared in the east, moving westwards.
It was described as a spiral moving light, completely silent. After about 1 minute or so, the light disappeared and seemed to dissolve, leaving a grey mist/halo expanding, then dissolving. The green/blue lighttrail remained for hours. People describing it as frightening/exciting and beautiful.
Norwegian defence say they dont know what it is. Russians say they have not launched any rockets, neither have the Norwegian Andøya rocketsite.
It is not Aurora borealis, and not a meteor since it remained in the skies for more than 2 minutes. Russian, Swedish and Norwegian rocket sites report they have not fired any rockets. Nobody knows what this is.

This is definitely not a variation of the aurora, "he says.
He says that people ran out onto the balcony to see the light.
- That was the way that you stood and måpte. Jeg hørte ingenting. I heard nothing. It was like a gray shock wave that spread like a perfect circle beyond the horizon, "says Rosenberg.
- It looked like it came over a mountain. Først gikk den i bane, før den stoppet helt opp. First, it went into orbit, before it stopped completely. Then it began to circulate, and so it went in the resolution. Then there was suddenly a big ring, so big that it covered the whole sky, "said Stig Roar Hansen (38) who works at Skjervøy in Troms.
- Sterkt hvitt lys - Strong white light
Morten Bjørkmo Kristiansen (23) hadde akkurat kommet hjem fra nattevakt da fenomenet åpenbarte seg over ham. Bjørkmo Morten Kristiansen (23) had just come home from night duty when the phenomenon revealed itself to him.
- First it was a very strong white light in the middle of the ring. Så begynte det å bre seg utover. Then it began to spread outwards. The green line or beam that you see in the picture was there in probably ten to twelve minutes afterwards. Det var faren min som oppdaget det. It was my father who discovered it. He has not seen anything like that before. We stood on the porch at home and wondered how this could be. Jeg tror ikke det er nordlys. I do not think it's aurora. We are accustomed to seeing, "said Kristiansen.
Vet ikke hva det er Do not know what it is
Meteorologene i Tromsø vet heller ikke hva lyset skyldes. Meteorologists in Tromsø do not know what caused the light.
- Vi aner ikke hva det er. - We have no idea what it is. I dare not guess either, but it has apparently been very spectacular, "said Trond Robertsen, duty meteorology consultant at the department in Tromsø.
- People describe lysbevegelsen as violent, stunningly beautiful and somewhat frightening. They describe it as New Year's rocket that looks like a spinning spiral, "said Robertsen to VG Nett.
Lysfenomenet varte i noen få minutter, like før klokken åtte onsdag morgen. He says that the sky is still turquoise in the places where light could sees.Lysfenomenet lasted a few minutes, just before eight o'clock Wednesday morning. Robertsen mener lyset tydligvis har kommet østfra. Robertsen said light tydligvis have come from the east.
- We have received calls from people from Alta in the north to Kjøpsvik, just south of Narvik, "said Robertsen.
Ikke sett noe lignende før Not seen anything like it before
- People have no idea about what it is. They have nothing they can relate it to, because no one has seen anything like this before. There may be a meteorite, but it is only speculation. We do not know what it is, but should try to find out. Vi er like nysgjerrige vi også. We are just curious, too.
The only Robertsen is sure is that the light does not have anything with the northern lights to do.

OBJECTIVE: The sexually abused-sexual abuser hypothesis states there is a specific relationship between sexual abuse history and sexual offending, such that individuals who experience sexual abuse are significantly more likely to later engage in sexual offenses. Therefore, samples of adult sex offenders should contain a disproportionate number of individuals who have experienced sexual abuse, but not necessarily other types of abuse, compared with samples of other types of offenders. METHODS: We compared rates of sexual and other forms of abuse reported in 17 studies, involving 1,037 sex offenders and 1,762 non-sex offenders. We also examined the prevalence of different forms of abuse in 15 studies that compared adult sex offenders against adults (n=962) and against children (n=1,334), to determine if the sexually abused-sexual abuser association is even more specific to individuals who sexually offend against children. RESULTS: We observed a higher prevalence of sexual abuse history among adult sex offenders than among non-sex offenders (Odds Ratio=3.36, 95% confidence intervals of 2.23-4.82). The two groups did not significantly differ with regard to physical abuse history (OR=1.50, 95% CI=0.88-2.56). There was a significantly lower prevalence of sexual abuse history among sex offenders against adults compared to sex offenders against children (OR=0.51, 95% CI=0.35-0.74), whereas the opposite was found for physical abuse (OR=1.43, 95% CI=1.02-2.02). CONCLUSION: There is support for the sexually abused-sexual abuser hypothesis, in that sex offenders are more likely to have been sexually abused than non-sex offenders, but not more likely to have been physically abused. We discuss potential mechanisms for the relationship between sexual abuse history and sexual offending, including the possibility that a third factor might account for the relationship. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The most obvious implications of these findings is that the prevention of sexual abuse of children, either through prevention programs directly targeting children or through treatment programs targeting individuals who are likely to sexually offend against children (e.g., known sex offenders against extra-familial boys), may eventually reduce the number of sex offenders. This implication is dependent, however, on a causal role of childhood sexual abuse, and on the effectiveness of prevention and treatment practices.
